Camp cooking volunteers needed, and half-year memberships

Hello 3rd Ottawa parents,

I hope your youth are enjoying the 3rd Ottawa this year – we have had some very active sections and done a number of really fun and adventurous activities in all of them – whether it was the Beavers swimming at Dovercourt or the Scouts and Venturers building a toboggan run into a quinzhee, this has been a great year.

In May, we are planning the first (at least that any of us remember) “All Sections” camp at Scouts Canada Camp Otter Lake.  “All Sections” means the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers will all be taking part in the weekend.  It should be a ton of fun, particularly during the group meals and campfires.  I guarantee your youth will come home singing new songs (and sorry if they sing them constantly for a while).  We are looking for parent volunteers to help us out in our group kitchen.  It’s a lot of work and standing, there isn’t any running water, you’re working outside, and it will be a nearly constant effort of either cooking or washing.  That said, you will be around dozens of happy youth, help keep them energized and having fun, and maybe learn a few things about big group camps.  Several experienced camp cooks will be on site, so all you need is a willingness to do the work and a spirit for adventure.  Please contact Tim Welch (welcht at gmail dot com) if you are up for it!

Regarding memberships, Scouts Canada has introduced reduced-rate half-year memberships for $95 from February – June.  If your youth wants to bring a friend, this is a great opportunity to have them try out Scouting.  Contact your leader to find out more.

Happy Easter and look forward to seeing you soon!

Tim Welch, Group Commissioner
